Note from Sandy: This review is written based on the translated version of “Nice Girls Don’t Get the Corner Office , 101Unconcious Mistakes Women Make That Sabotage Their Careers”.
This book contains 101 ‘mistakes’ that, in Dr Frankel’s opinion, have sabotaged many women’s career. For each ‘mistake’, Dr Frankel explained why she considered it a ‘mistake’ and offered an advice or two that can alleviate the problem.
For example, mistake #50: “Being too humble”, Dr Frankel pointed out how women often lessen their efforts unnecessarily. Admit it, girls! Dr Frankel suggested that the sentence “ Oh, it’s nothing, really ” be wiped out completely from every woman’s dictionary. When being praised, say a simple “thank you” instead.
When reading this book, try not to lose the big picture, the author is trying to offer her best practises based on what she had seen in her years of experiences as a coach and therapist. Dr Frankel seemed to believe that the major reason why some women don’t get the career they want is because they have too much of feminine characteristics in them. She referred this as the “nice girls” behaviours.
Unfortunately, in many parts of this book, she got a little fanatical about banishing femininity, like in Mistake #27: Providing Food. She noticed that only women have cookies, sweets, or snacks, placed strategically on their desk. She strongly believed that providing food for others have no added points whatsoever, “The combination of serving and inviting others for a chat reflects a typical feminine trait”. Another rather questionable statement, “Long hair, a symbol of femininity, reduces a woman’s credibility”. Going through the book, the impression is that for each feminine trait displayed, a woman’s credibility is decremented by one point.
Dr Frankel should feel fortunate that she is a woman herself. Otherwise, she might have been labelled a misogynist by fanatic feminists worldwide. Dr Frankel is bound to have two groups of fans. The first is a group of women who are happy because her advices helped them to identify their shortcomings. The latter is a group consists of bunch of blinded devotees. These women have short hair, wear serious suits, serious faces, a controlled smile, fearing that they will not be taken seriously if they smile too much. They avoid decorating their office with soft toys or anything that will display their feminine side, of course, no sweets on their desks.
